9-Year-Old Boy Whose Love of Sewing Went Viral Teaches Us All to Be Ourselves

9-year-old Sam has become viral sensation after a video of her reaction to buying a new sewing machine received over 2.5 million views. And one of the highlights of his story is the support of his family and how Sam overcame bullies at school and learned to be authentically himself.

Lifestyle expert and our friend Tommy DiDario chatted with Sam and his parents to learn more about his story.

“Sam is definitely one of a kind. He’s so outgoing. He’s so empathetic. He’s so compassionate. He’s just a wonderful kid who really doesn’t hold back his personality, and that’s a rare and beautiful thing,” says Sam’s father, Aaron Gouvéia.

In fact, this isn’t the first time Sam has been at the center of a viral story.

“Almost four years ago, he painted his nails because he loves bright colors. And when he went to kindergarten, he got bullied for it. At the end of the day, when we recovered it, it collapsed. [his mom’s] arms – he was so sad. So I wrote a Twitter thread saying how unfortunate it was to happen – how kids aren’t born thinking it’s a bad thing for boys to wear nail polish. It’s a learned behavior and it’s a shame. It limits boys in what they can do and think. So, I put that out there and it went viral and it snowballed from there,” Aaron explained.

As these two stories about Sam have gone viral, his parents, Aaron and MJ, have been praised for their support as parents. But, according to Aaron, he wasn’t always so open-minded.

“I definitely didn’t start like that. I grew up in a small suburb of Boston. There wasn’t a lot of diversity. I remember very well my eldest who was 14 when he was born, MJ put pink socks on him and I had a gut reaction to that, I was like, ‘They’ll think he’s a girl’ or ‘Maybe they’ll think he’s gay’ And I remember she looked at me and said, ‘Are either of those two things bad?’ And it just stopped me cold. From then on, when you know better, do better – and that’s what I tried to do,” Aaron says.

“I think it’s important that parents just love their kids for who they are no matter what, because if you’re not their biggest supporter then no one is. As a father, it should all be about wanting to see your child happy. If a child is going to be bullied, I would much rather Sam be bullied for who he is and for being himself. That’s really key for me .

And of course, the reason Sam went viral is his love for sewing.

“It’s kind of a family tradition. My aunt taught me how to sew. I was doing little projects with her. And hearing the sound of my sewing and watching the thing I’m doing [is what excites me most about it]. Saying to myself, ‘I’ve done something good,'” Sam says.

He makes what he calls “designer bags”. “I make suspenders, with pockets. I don’t know how to make zippers yet,” he explains. He even made one for Rach, how adorable!

“You’re too cool to go to school!” said Rachel. “Wow!”

Were so inspired by Sam’s story. And of course, we want Sam to keep sewing, so our friends at Singer gave him a ton of sewing accessories. Plus, our friends at Simon gave Sam a bunch of freebies and gift cards, including a $1,000 Simon shop card!

Not to mention that Sam also had the chance to give his dad a super cool makeover with help from Tommy.
